Nestled in the hearts of Tallapoosa, Coosa, and Elmore counties, beautiful Lake Martin is composed over 800 miles of wooded shoreline, filled by the reverberant waters of the Tallapoosa River. Constructed in 1923 and completed in 1926 with the opening of the Martin Dam, Lake martin was built by the Alabama Power Company as a 44,000-acre reservoir to generate hydroelectric power. One of the largest man-made lakes in the United States, Lake Martin features an inexplicable amount of beautiful waterfront, waterfront luxury homes, and tourist attractions. In 2010, then Governor Bob Riley signed an executive order creating the designation of “Treasured Alabama Lake”, which is awarded by the Alabama Department of Environmental Management.
